R. Lee Penn

Please join us for a special event with Dr. Lee Penn (University of Minnesota) on November 16, at 3:00PM PT. Dr. Penn will give a technical talk on their group's work on iron oxide nanoparticles in reactive media and spend the second portion of the event discussing their work promoting diversity, equity and inclusion values on campus and throughout their career in STEM. This will be a more informal talk where the audience is encouraged to engage in a discussion with Dr. Penn.

Join us for a conversation with marine biologist, policy expert and writer Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson on Tuesday, 19 October at 12:00PM PDT. Dr. Johnson will discuss her recent book, “All We Can Save,” the future of oceans and climate change, and her personal journey from Brooklyn NY to marine biology to climate policy, and answer audience questions.

Timnit Gebru

We are delighted that Timnit Gebru will be speaking on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at 4:00PM, PST. Dr. Gebru is an important voice in AI and an advocate for diversity in technology. She is the cofounder of Black in AI, a place for sharing ideas, fostering collaborations and discussing initiatives to increase the presence of Black people in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Her talk title is "The hierarchy of knowledge in machine learning & related fields and its consequences". The seminar, which will take place via Zoom, will include an extended Q&A session where Dr. Gebru will answer questions related to her research and her own journey into science.

Wanda Díaz-Merced

Dr. Díaz-Merced is an astronomer and the leading proponent of sonification of astrophysical data. As someone who lost their eyesight, she is a leader in increasing equality of access to astronomy and using audible sound to study astrophysical data. Her talk is titled, “More than one sensorial modality to do mainstream science in astronomy” she will discuss her research and personal journey, and answer audience questions.

Kafui Dzirasa

We are delighted that Kafui Dzirasa will be speaking on February 11, 2021 at 4:00PM PST. Dr. Dzirasa is an award-winning neuroscientist. He is the K. Ranga Rama Krishnan endowed Associate Professor at Duke University with appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Neurobiology, Biomedical Engineering, and Neurosurgery. His research is focused on understanding how changes in the brain produce neurological and mental illness. His talk title is "Mapping the structure of emotions". Dr. Dzirasa is an important advocate for diversity in STEM and for health education in under served communities. The seminar will include an interview and extended Q&A session where Dr. Dzirasa will answer questions about his own experiences and journey into science.

David Van Valen

David Van Valen will be speaking on November, 2 at 4:00PM, PDT. This seminar will consist of 2 talks, the first focusing on David's science and the second focusing on his journey into science. Due to COVID 19 this event will take place online. David studies how living systems and their respective viruses encode and decode information about their internal state and their environment by combining ideas from cell biology and physics with recent advances in imaging, machine learning, and genomics to make novel measurements. The title of his talk is "How Cells Live".
